Today, at 2:00pm, Ms. Mellica Rezaii, one of the hunger strikers in Camp Liberty, was urgently carried to the camp’s clinic while she was suffering from severe respiratory problems. She was subsequently taken to a hospital in Baghdad. Her health status is still unstable and she is under medical care.
The hunger strike in Camp Liberty is in its 83rd day, and the health conditions of the hunger strikers have reached very critical levels. Every day, an increasing number of the hunger strikers are being taken to the camp’s clinic under emergency conditions, and it is clear that their lives are in danger. Yet the hunger strikers insist on continuing their hunger striker until the seven Camp Ashraf hostages, who have been abducted by Iraqi forces on September 1st, are freed.
The silence and inaction of the US and UN regarding the release of the hostages and the protection of Camp Liberty from further attacks is the main reason that the residents of the camp and hundreds of Iranian across the world have launched their hunger strike. The US and UN will be responsible for anything that happens to the hostages or any of the hunger strikers.
